Mumsnet Blogfest here I come…

mumsnet

On Saturday I am attending Blogfest, eeek. I’m a first-timer and yes I am shitting myself BUT I am listening to the universe and it is telling me to get my arse there, so I am dutifully obliging. I did say to myself at the start of the year that I would attend a Blogging Conference and it wasn’t until I went back to work and Mia turned one, that I started getting some sleep and so actually felt human enough to complete anything other than keeping baby alive, fed, watered and happy. By then I had missed the majority of blogging events and so was pleased to see that Mumsnet BlogFest was still to come.

So if you are going to be on there on Saturday, let me know, tweet me!

Wish me luck peeps.

Entrepreneurship 101: the workshop

Business - tea and notebookA couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend the Hiscox entrepreneurship workshop with the Start-up Academy. I was invited by Joe Blogs, who by the way are a fab blogger network.

I wasn’t sure what to expect but got myself up and out of the house early and the day did not disappoint. Not only was it held at the Joe’s Blogs super cool HQ in Kings Cross, where we were really looked after and kept well fed and watered throughout the day. But the workshop was both comprehensive and inspiring and I left with head buzzing with ideas.

So what did I learn. . .there was plenty but these are my top 10 takeaway tit-bits:

  • Entrepreneurship is not for the faint hearted, it takes dedication and commitment but on the plus side I also saw ways I can make it work for me.
  • There are lots tools out there to help with managing time, accessing, storing and monitoring data.
  • You are your business. It will become your life.
  • You absolutely must keep on top of your accounting.
  • Processes are as important as creativity. Processes help you to make money and save time now and later on down the line.
  • Opportunity planning and how to sell!
  • It’s never too early to think about partnerships, just make sure they are a good fit.
  • Funding sources.
  • Protecting your business through insurance
  • Save money to make money BUT never compromise on the product/service.

The main thing I took away from the workshop was about planning and attitudes to getting things done. Now I am the to-do list queen, I often have a few on-the-go, categorised by home, work, Mia!, general…I could go on. I thought the to-do list was a relatively effective way of organising myself. I am quite forgetful and I find a good old list helps me to remember. However Anick (our presenter for the day) turned this completely on its head and challenged me to think about them in a new way.

It partly involves doing the to-do rather than writing it on a list, which completely makes sense. As well as prioritising better and planning my workload. In some cases, in the time it took me to add said ‘to-do’ to the list, I could have just completed the damn task.  I have now been trialling this new approach since the workshop two weeks ago and I’m surprised but pleased to say it has upped my productivity, as well as helping me to feel less overwhelmed about how much I have to do.

Yes this is actually an office!

The workshop could not have come at a better time for me, the universe really was at play again, planting the seeds and encouraging me to make things happen. I am in the middle of making some pretty big changes to my working life in the  pursuit of a portfolio career (which includes self-employment) and lets just say that it helped me in many ways.

I would highly recommend the Start-up academy to anyone starting a business. Their mission is to empower start-ups and give them access to the same knowledge and tools the big boy businesses have in terms of training and education, access to funding and support to grow. So it would be pretty valuable to anyone venturing into the world of business for the first time.

A big thank-you to Hiscox, Start-up Academy and Joe Blogs for having me!

100 happy days

I’ve always been interested in doing a gratitude diary but never found the time to actually do it. By nature I am always incredibly thankful and even during the times when it may have been hard to put one foot in front of the other, I have always had a sense that I am very blessed and indeed have much to be thankful for.

I came across the 100 happy days project on the Any other woman blog and decided that this would be my gratitude diary. I love the idea of celebrating life and showing that ‘everyday may not be good but there is something good in everyday’. If you’d like to see how I am getting on (100 days is a loong time!) follow on instagram.

First Valentine’s Day after baby…

Happy Valentine's day

The Mr and I are celebrating our 11th Valentine’s Day together and our first post-baby.

We’ve never been big on Valentine’s, but always marked it In some kind of way. I woke up this morning thinking about how different the day is now that the little lady is here. Here are my 5 ways Valentine’s Day has changed…

1. It is achievement to buy each other a card let alone a gift. Says under her breath ‘Our child is my gift to you!’ ; )

2. Having grudgingly attended restaurants on this day in the past and partook in the cheesy sharing of a heart-shaped dessert, this suddenly becomes something that you’d actually quite like to do..and totally without the former embarrassment.

3. The Valentine’s date becomes a lunch for 2 and a high chair…on Sunday! (watch this space to see where we end up, I’m being surprised!)

4. The sugar cravings induced by sleep deprivation means that any chocolate exchanged is devoured in moments rather than hours.

5. It becomes a day to remember not only love for the Mr, but love for baby girl too and our new little family. Aww!

Happy Valentine’s Day y’all!
